Cramps

What? Period cramps, or dysmenorrhea, are painful sensations in the lower abdomen that occur right before or during your period.

Why? They are caused by your uterus contracting to shed its lining.

Am I alone? Not at all—about 80% of people who menstruate experience cramps.

The severity can range from mild discomfort to intense pain that disrupts daily life.
